Recipe Review #3 Robust BBQ Chicken Pizza

The comfort food of all time - Pizza. Just thinking of the gooey cheese makes me want to make another. Last night I made p.107 Robust BBQ Chicken Pizza.   This is an interesting recipe for those of you that like the "alternative" types of pizzas we are seeing on menus everywhere.   This pizza had an unusual choice of cheese, Gouda along with a little Mozzarella.   I really liked the addition of the Cilantro on top and the pitas really make a great crust without going overboard on the S/C value.   I find these little pita pizzas quite easy to whip together on an eat and run night. I can make other flavors for my kids, i.e. cheese and pepperoni and they are happy not eating mom and dad's "weird" food.

Overall impression:  I like the pita pizzas, this one was a little strange, but I think it was mostly the BBQ sauce flavor mixed with the Gouda.   I will try again with another flavor of BBQ.

Some notes on the ingredients:  I did not have the Scott's Barbecue Sauce as in the recipe so instead I used the Nature's Hollow Sugar Free BBQ Sauce which has a very smoky flavor.   I really want to try the Scott's brand as it is highly recommended by Jorge but it is nowhere to be found in my area.   Upon inquiring with Scott's, they promptly responded and kindly offered to ship me whatever I wanted to buy, so I will be placing an order.   I really don't like having to order food but I am finding that there are a few things that just aren't sold in the Midwest that seem to fit the BFC bill.   So far:  Jams, Syrup, and BBQ sauce!

  1. I love the pizzas too, but I always use the Smart & Delicious tortillas instead of pitas. But dont feel bad about not being able to find the natural Sugar Free stuff. Im in California, mecca for this stuff you would think, and no Nature's Hallow or Scott BBQ I can find either. We do have Trader Joes and Whole Foods, so I wont complain too much!

    What Pitas did you use?

  2. Just received my gallon jug of Scott's BBQ sauce. Misleading as it is very runny and is like vinegar with spices! Not thick and like a normal sauce as depicted in the book.

  3. I use Joseph's pita bread. There are 2 kinds: 1) whole wheat and 2) Flax, Oat Bran & Whole Wheat which has NO sugar and the total carbs is 8g. They taste great!! I use them for pizza and tuna sandwich (I use 1 pita and just fold it over).

Also I use Head Country Hickory Smoke BBQ Sauce--4g sugars and carbs at 8g. It's good with the BBQ chicken recipe.

The bread I use for French Toast or sandwiches is Mrs. Baird's sugar free Whole Grain Wheat. I'm a huge bread person and was pleasantly surprised with the taste.

  4. I am wondering, is one pizza really 4 servings? I made a pita pizza last night and then I sat down while it was baking and looked at the recipe. Serves 4. Did I read that wrong. I only ate half of it. Ate the other half today. What a bummer. I was starving!!! :)

  5. the pita pizza serves 4 in the book because I think you are to also use 4 pitas...I made 1 pita as 1 serving.

  6. Scott's BBQ sauce is made here in the state of North Carolina. It is a vinegar based concoction. I do NOT like Scott's because it is "hot" and I much prefer the tomato based BBQ sauces. So I purchased Walden's Farms and it was much better in the Finger Lickin Chicken recipe.

  7. Yes, I agree with redbud9....the Scott's sauce is wicked hot and loses the bbq feeling for me. I like the sweeter, tomato types. I bought a whole case of the stuff...YIKES

  10. I've read a lot about this book, and I keep reading that it's just another fad diet. The idea that a bacon burger (on a bun that is loaded with processed flour) is good and fruit is bad doesn't make any sense to me. I get that fruit has a lot of sugar, and you really shouldn't eat very much, and protein is healthy, but the bun with the processed flour and the condiments are loaded with garbage. That bun, IMO, will hurt more than the apple. Just my opinion.

I'm wondering how well you're doing on this diet, though.
